Virtualization

A few questions to consider:

  • How much did your electricity bill grow?
  • How often you do need information stored on your work computer while you are working remotely or out of office? Can you imagine the disaster if your accountant loses all the data?
  • How many times have you had to wait for help from a system administrator when the each minute was in count?
  • How much money and time would it take to move your office to another location, to set up a branch office, one more work place or even to install new software on office computers?
  • How much did the last upgrade of software and hardware cost you?
  • We never intended to spoil your mood, just wanted to give you a solution to all these troubles! Did your mood get spoiled? We know how to solve all these problems!

Virtualization of desktops and applications, with the simple architecture built on a terminal server and thin client with low power consumption, takes increasingly more popularity through either big or small business.

Users don’t see the difference between customary computer and terminal, on the contrary all applications usually run faster than on PC. All work operations are accomplished on server. Thin clients are allotted the role of input/output data device and can be presented not only by low power consumption devices, but also by ordinary net/notebooks. Desktop virtualization offers an economic gain for business and a number of advantages for users working with corporative information:

More security for corporate data

When work is conducted on a server, your data security level transfers to a higher level and you get a chance eliminate the risk of any damages from data loss as a result of user’s activity or virus attack.

Work with corporative data anywhere and anytime

Those who use virtual PC can comfortably work with corporate data during business trips or when working at home. All user’s information is stored on server, and there is no need to carry everywhere the copies of when you might need.

New work place within 10 minutes

Just switch on your terminal to a wall outlet – all your settings will be downloaded automatically from the server, just as easy as that!

Centralized administration

There is no software or hardware that would require any servicing by system administrator, recurrent maintenance, upgrade or diagnosing. All user software is stored on the server and controller by system administrator.

Less investments in IT infrastructure

A value of the workplace will be reduced since there is 20 % decrease in cost of hardware, up to 40% decrease in the cost of licenses on users’ software, and up to 80% in installation cost.

Decrease in aggregate value

Decrease in desktop maintenance cost (up to 80%) is achieved due to centralized administering and dramatic decrease in hourly costs for desktop service. The decrease is also possible thanks to fewer expenses on training of in-house employees – there will be no need for highly qualified specialists.

Fewer expenses on upgrades

Virtualization saves from the need to upgrade desktop hardware. When using terminal solutions upgrade of just one terminal server is required instead of all company computers. Since there are no moving parts and power consumption is minimal, the life time of a thin client is few times longer that the life time of a desktop.

Energy saving

A typical thin client consumes electric energy 10-20 times less than an average desktop. Imagine an office with 50 desktops. Power consumption of one standard desktop is 200-250 Wt, 10-12.5 kWt – in total for our office. To keep the temperature level on a required level during the summer period, usually standard split systems with coefficient of efficiency equal to 2-2.5 are used. So extra energy (4-5 Wt) will be used on rejection of heat produced by desktops. In total we spend 14-17.5 kWt.

Now let’s imagine an office with terminals at work places. Power consumption of one think client is 5-25 Wt, 250-1250 Wt for the whole office; and the required electric energy for office cooling is 100- 625 Wt. So we get the total of 0, 3- 1, 8 kWt. At the end we save up to 12 kWt of electric energy per hour for the whole office. This is a great result considering all the expenses on coolers, montage and maintenance!

Below is a chart showing ROI and monthly savings with average showing (current rates on electric energy in Cyprus, 200 Wt as an average power consumption of one computer, 25 Wt as an average power consumption of one notebook being an example of a thin client, cooler’s coefficient of efficiency – 2.5, 3 servers and 20 users).

Desktop Virtualization helps to cut the electricity bill

Lower cost of UPS

Since a typical thin client consumes on average 50 times less energy than a desktop, and then it is possible to use one UPS for over 10 terminal work places. You can save even more if there are centralized pathways for computer hardware, as in that case one or two UPS will be enough for all office work places. So, the conclusion is that the expenses on purchase and maintenance of UPS will be dozens of times less.

Less requirements to network speed

When thin clients are working with terminal applications server and data is not transmitted via network, but by pressing keyboard buttons (RDP), movements of mouse and display refreshes. This is the most effective way of data transmission even in outdated networks. Owing to this system administrators can provide users with a high performance level in both wireline and wireless networks.
